If you are facing an unplanned pregnancy and are searching for options, you might have stumbled upon information on at-home abortions. Even if you are considering terminating your pregnancy, at-home abortions are dangerous and may be ineffective.
Some women wishing to have an abortion may feel inclined to perform the procedure themselves and without medical or professional treatment. The absence of medical presence can be extremely harmful to your health, both during and after the procedure.
In addition, while the FDA highly advises against purchasing over-the-counter medicine online because of health risks, buying medicine without a prescription and from someone without a license is illegal. Medicine bought and sold online makes it difficult to tell what you’re actually getting and whom it is coming from, making it extremely dangerous to your health.
Even products that may seem harmless, such as vitamins and herbs, whether purchased online or in a store, are potentially harmful to your health when taken incorrectly. Just because a substance is natural, does not mean it is safe.
Below are some health problems you could face in the event of at-home abortions.
- Excessive bleeding. While some bleeding after abortions is normal, at-home abortions pose the risk of harming yourself and your body, causing potential damage to your uterus, cervix and organs. Fluid and electrolyte imbalance can occur and may lead to the need for emergency room services and/or hospitalization.
- Incomplete Process. Medical abortions and at-home abortions are not effective 100% of the time. In the case that an abortion has failed, women require a surgical abortion to complete the process. In an at-home abortion, due to lack of medical equipment, procedure and knowledge, it is very possible that the abortion could have failed without the woman knowing about it. In addition, depending on the stage of pregnancy, the abortion could have been performed to the extent that the fetus is deceased, but the tissue is still inside the womb. Leaving tissue inside the womb is extremely dangerous to the woman, and the rest of the procedure would need to be performed by a medical professional.
- Mental Trauma. It is common and normal for women to experience mental trauma or depression after an abortion. Most women benefit from seeing professionals or counselors after abortions to help them through the process of healing. In the event of an at-home abortion, it is harder to handle post-abortion depression because of lack of medical and professional presence. In addition, women may feel ashamed or scared, not wanting to talk about it, thus leaving the depression untreated
- Online/Illegal Substance. Taking substances purchased online can cause severe health concerns. Because you don’t know where the medicine is actually coming from, or what’s in it, you could develop side effects potentially putting your health in danger.
